I’ve just finished the 1st Draft of my new WIP: Healer Moon

Woo hoo.

There is nothing quite so euphoric as writing the words ‘THE END’ at the end of a novel. There is also nothing quite so sad, or terrifying. Sad, because I will never again take that same, unknown journey of discovery with those characters, and terrifying, because now I know I’ve got to delve back in and redraft, cutting and editing and reshaping to try to make it into something far better, more cohesive, pacey with great highs and lows and chapter ending hooks and great GMC’s (Goals, Motivations and Conflicts) for my characters, checking on the plot, the overall arc of the book, and, because this is the 2nd in a series, the overall arc of the series and so on and so on. It’s waaaayyyy tooooo loooong, so there will be lots to cut. But I’ve done it before and I know I can do it again (with a lot of heart wrenching and agonising and help from my fabulous crit partners who slap me upside of the head when I need it! πŸ™‚ )

My usual plan is to give myself a couple of weeks away from it – usually working on something else in the meantime. Sometimes this is easy and sometimes it is really hard. I think with this one, because I love the characters so much, it’s going to be really hard. But, I do have other stuff to work on, so I will endeavour to be good and give myself some space, as all the experts suggest, before I come back to it with hopefully a clearer mind and open eyes.

But, regardless of all of that, woo hoo. It’s done and I can go and celebrate.
